Officials Plan Expansion of Newport Vermont Airport

Community leaders along the Vermont-Canadian border are launching a nine-year project to upgrade the Newport State Airport.

The plan calls for adding 1,000 feet to the runway, improving water and sewer services and adding services from Customs and Border Protection and the Transportation Security Agency.

Patricia Sears of the Newport City Renaissance Corporation said Monday that the expansion would be carried out through a partnership between public and private organizations, including the state and federal government.

The expansion of the airport, located in Coventry just south of Newport, follows a business expansion of the nearby Jay Peak ski area and other growing businesses in the area.
